Need Opinion On Price Of Graded Morgan

SilverTracker Pillar of the Community United States 589 Posts	Posted 06/02/2015 1:30 pm I need opinions on this: I went into a high end we buy gold/ silver place on lunch today and they had a 1896 Morgan silver dollar for $ 30.00 that was graded MS 63/65 rating by a company I never heard of. The company name was something like the World Coin Grading Company and their was 2 photos of the Morgan, one picture of the obverse and one of the reverse attached to the plastic covering. From what the owner told me, back then they issued a separate grade for both the obverse and reverse of a coin. Now the Morgan was in a like oversized Flip with everything sealed shut, but definitely not hard plastic or anything you see today with NGC etc. I can get this on Thursday but wanted some opinions on this before going back to purchase it. Also he is offering to me very worn Morgan's and Peace dollars for $ 18.00 each. Is this a good price? He preceded to tell me he will not be able to do even worn Morgans for this price in the near future because he is being charged more for them. Thanks for all opinions on this. I trade in the morgan and Peace dollars every day and recommend you keep those and perhaps liquidate something else? Use your judgement of the coins quality over some attached grade though. You're buying the coin not the label. Report this Post to the Staff

There was a period of time in the late 1980's where ANACS and some other companies graded coins like this. They are called photo certificates and are now becoming collectible as is. I would buy it, at $30.00 there really is not much of a downside. APMEX is selling culls as low as $20.55 for up to 19 coins so $18.00 seems to be a good price for them now. Look at the coin and see what grade you think it is yourself. They tended to be more conservative back then on grades. Report this Post to the Staff

Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6385 Posts	Posted 06/03/2015 2:51 pm $30 sounds like an excellent price for any pre-1921 Morgan in uncirculated grade. Unless the coin looks worn, damaged, or otherwise substandard I'd pay that in a heartbeat. The photo-cert is possibly worth saving, as noted. The $18 price for the worn coins sounds good too, assuming you can select the nicer ones. I'd stay away from holed and seriously damaged pieces even at that price. Report this Post to the Staff
