Hi I'm Andrea and will probably be on here to learn from these forumns! I was given a bunch of world and US coins from a friend who is trying to help me out financially so I could sell them. So first question is ebay or Amazon? Second, is it better to clean the coins before selling? Not scrub them or anything but shine them of possible? lastly,I have a 1974 D Kennedy half dollar... I believe its errored but because it's been circulated for so long it's hard to tell. I believe DDO is the term? I've been staring at it so long, not to mention my poor vision and now I feel like there's letters allll over the place! So in case I'm seeing things that aren't there :) I'll say the one obvious thing to me and if you see anything else let me know :) Above the "'we' trust:" and the "in' God" Edited by DreaExOh 06/02/2015 1:43 pm

Andrea and that's really nice of your friend. FIRST : Never clean a coin/ shine it. I have used a very mild dish soap or some say to use acetone for a sec if it had adhesive on it and just blot it dry with a soft towel. Never scrub. SECOND: that 1974 half dollar is very well circulated. I don't see anything wrong with it from those pictures but better images are always appreciated. Thank you for pointing out what spots to look at as well. Very helpful. LAST: google everything you can and use the forums to research about errors. DDO or double die obverse would be the correct term for doubling on the front of a coin. There a many types or classes of doubling. A very good site with picture is the double eddie if you google double die vs. Machine Doubling it should be the first thing that pops up and it will be doubleeddie.com . Machine Doubling is worthless and actually double dies can be very valuable so if your interested in collecting errors it's something to get very familiar with. There are some real experts that frequent the forums happy hunting and welcome

NEVER clean a coin. There are a few exceptions such as getting rid of verdigris or PVC damage. I think that is just a damaged coin. I would recommend getting The Official Red Book. If you read that you will learn a lot.

Never clean a coin. The use of acetone is a wise idea but, you need to be aware of the dangers in using it. For a new person you need to read up on how to use acetone safely. There are a number of post about this. Go to the Search Coin Community, left side of the page and search.

As everyone else said DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COINS! It will significantly lower the value from what I've seen. I can't speak to the error as I still ask a lot of questions in that area. Welcome to the forum!

There is a lot to learn, but it's fun and pays off in the long run- I've been collecting for about 7 years and have found about $300 in coins I wouldn't have caught if I didn't know about key dates, errors and such. The best I've found is a 1917 DDO Lincoln Cent. There are also, of course, the gifts of coins that will be given by family members or friends if they know you collect. and I hope you catch on to the hobby! Feel free to explore the forum and learn all you want. Maybe you actually will find some errors! I have found a couple of small ones.
