denco7 Pillar of the Community United States 2543 Posts	Posted 06/01/2015 5:46 pm Looks like a plated coin, where the plating is deteriorating. When the 1944 cents were minted, a few of them came out on steel planchets (theory is , there were a few steel planchets still stuck in the hopper from the 1943 mintage. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 06/01/2015 9:10 pm The OP's coin maybe just painted. Note how the copper is showing through on the tops of the devices and bust. There were off metal both years. Should have been steel in 1943 and should have been copper in 1944: Both are legit errors and the prices might surprise you for these as they are going up and up through the years.
