Has anybody tried a edge lettering GIF with the coin rotating edge on to read the edge lettering? How many shot would it take to make a smooth rotation?

It would take a lot of shots. I'd say you'd need a couple shots for each letter. Perhaps one shot with each letter straight-on, and one intermediate. Then the animation would need to have a few transitional images between those for smoothness. How many letters are there on a lettered-edge coin?

Lots of images, but it would be cool.

Capped Bust half dollar says "HALF A DOLLAR FIFTY CENTS" very wide spaced. I want to try this but have not used the GIMP animation before. I only have big coins with edge lettering, so it may be a LONG project. I'm going to try it. It may be great or a great disappointment.

So here is a sample. Not the full edge, the file size would be too big to upload. I used a Mexican 50 peso. Its a bullion coin, and has a very wide edge.

Nice! I haven't even begun to think about doing that yet. Very Cool idea!

That's cool Wizzy! One problem is how to photograph all the letters at a fixed spacing and perspective. You need some sort of turntable with angle ruler. I've seen such beasts around.

I just winged it. I used an acrylic coin display stand to hold the coin, and carefully rotated it a little bit . I used the microscope slide holders to hold the stand still. I took 72 shots to get a full 360. The smallest I could get the full GIF file was @ 750kb.
