Is there a good photo representation of how to identify Type I vs Type II coins? I understand that one is "attached" and the other is "detached"....but I'm not sure what that is referring to.

Does this guide from the JNDA catalog help? The photo is actually of a 1875 coin but the type is the same.

I had to look at what I had. I didn't think I had both varieties but it turns out I may have both.

Apologies for the poor photo as they have been taken more than a few years ago. I'm still looking for the other coin which is the scarcer variety so that I can take a better photo. Only reason why I kept both is because the number '6' looks different. I didn't pay attention to the 'Mei' character.

Now that I looked at the catalog value, I'm glad I didn't sell it off as junk - this is worth a fair bit even in low grade!
