1964 Proof , Wrong Reverse ? - Coin Community Forum

InfiniteInterest Pillar of the Community United States 673 Posts	Posted 12/31/2007 8:21 pm I was cataloging some coins today when I came across a Washington quarter proof single. Noticeably proof surfaces, not cameo but a nice brilliant proof. When I looked at the reverse I expected to see the "Type B Reverse" as all proofs from that era (1956-64) were struck with ( As far as I know ). The pics are not the greatest since they are my first proof coin pics but If you have seen a proof reverse on any 1960's proof quarter, the difference should be apparent. There is no large space between the E and S in states , and the leaf tip does not go above the arrow tip, and feather detail is very weak. So....what could this be ? IMO this reverse is the regular business strike reverse for 1964. The feather detail and other details do not indicate it could be an SMS (not a type C) I toyed with the idea that it could be a whizzed coin, but I see no indication that it has been cleaned, I will get it under a scope next week when my B&M opens back up. InfiniteInterest Pillar of the Community United States 673 Posts	Posted 01/01/2008 6:59 pm Well, after more study I have decided not to do this New Years Eve again ! Being in a hurry to get going after I found this coin I didn't really look that closely at it. After more scrutiny I now believe this coin to be a whizzed 1964-P business strike coin. Here is a pic of the entire reverse . In hand the letters have just the slightest rounding to them , not nice and square like a proof should be, you probably cannot tell this from the pic .You can see all the chest feather details , which made me think no whiz, but the details are a bit to soft I think. The reflectivity is such that I cannot get a decent picture without too much glare, the obverse has proved impossible so far. Any opinions are welcome, but I think I answered my own question.
