Here are 2 different shots of the reverse of the same coin. One with my iPhone and the other with my bellows setup. I have done some work in DDP on both. The iPhone shot is more like the coin looks in hand. I would like to get the same results with the bellows system. Your comments please.

Very nice. How did you achieve those results using my image from the bellows setup?

I just did a few adjustments in DPP to try matching the one from your iPhone. The iPhone pic is undersaturated and overexposed, so I increased brightness and reduced saturation. Color is still a bit off, as the iPhone shot is yellowish, while the adjusted photo is a little pinkish, but they're fairly close.

Here is the obverse of the same coin (1881CC). I "for the life of me" cannot get rid of the "hot spots" at 12:00 and at 5:00 and at 7:00. I have 2 jansjos set at about 10:30 and 1:30 at 90 degrees to each other and 180mm from the coin. Any suggestions?

I even tried with 4 Janjos. Positioned at 1:30, 10:30, 4:30, & 7:30. Angle about 45 degrees with a distance from the lights to the coin 220mm. Might be a little better, but not what I am looking for (looking for more even distribution of lights). Looking for suggestions, help, etc.

ham this last photo looks very good. here is a couple of shots taken with a Rodenstock first photo this coin is mint in plastic that is scratched. the second photo is taken with a Minolta 100mm f4 bellows lens. I used to jansjo lamps with Kleenex doubled. lighting a silver coin or nickel is not easy. you are doing a great job

Ham...those hotspots are "luster bars". Not sure you really want to get rid of them. Most folks want to enhance them. What sort of look are you looking for with this coin?

Thanks for the reply rocky and ray. I guess what I was looking for is an overall view with a constant look or flow. Now that you mention the importance of the luster bars, that look seems very acceptable. I have noticed that some images on this site do not have the luster bars. Maybe due to the brightness of the silver coin?

ham I think I will try this axle lighting next for silver coins. I found a link that goes into axle lighting in detail and think I will try it. some of the Canadian coins are very bright. I think they would be easier to photograph with this kind of lighting. have a great one

I have a photo that this person took of one of the American dollars. this is his image and he explains how to setup the glass. where to hit the glass with the light from the janjo lamp. he also explains how moving the glass one can get different effects. here his image.
