Hi Everyone:
I am looking at the coin below as a possible purchase. It is graded @ PCGS XF40. Despite the slab, I am somewhat uncomfortable with the surfaces. They appear porous and dull, as if the coin had been dipped at some point. I realize these are not the best shots, but it's all I have to work with. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read!

Nice coin and looks like original surfaces to me. Looking at coin photos can be deceiving. Lighting and photo quality make a big difference from looking at the same coin in hand. I would rely on PCGS with this one.

You would do well to avoid such a coin unless purchased at a significant discount from retail. PCGS said the cleaning was "market-acceptable", and it might be, but that doesn't make it desirable to most collectors which I would say it is not. It is improperly cleaned to me.

Agree with Krusti, this is kind of crusty. Not for me.
Rest in Peace

A 40 SLH is not going to show much luster, even in the hidden recesses, so I wouldn't be concerned with a lack of luster. There does appear to be some random pitting, but that could very well be from rusted dies, since it's only showing on the obverse. I wouldn't be afraid of this coin if it looks nice in hand. PCGS is usually darned accurate on their mid-date SL's of any denomination.

I'm not an expert on this date but Imo there is still some underlying luster here and there but the coin appears to have its original striped off. It looks to me to be closer to XF45

I would agree this one looks EF-45.

Based on my experience with PCGS, this is a dipped AU53-AU55 that was "market acceptable" graded at XF40.

Obverse and reverse are AU+ strength, look at the hair, elbow, shield lines, reverse feathers and wing tips.

This one is a tough call for me. I am not happy with the pictures, but this is a tough date. I am thinking of taking it on approval, with the hope that it will appear differently in hand.

Thanks for the replies. As always, they are a big help to me.
