Can someone please tell me if my coin can come back MS with the 2 nicks in it ? There is one on PCGS that graded MS 64 and mine is in better condition except the 2 nicks in my opinion for the variety & type , Round 6 7x6 star CAC BD-6 , R.2 http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half-.../1204-5723.s

Your coin cannot be graded. The obverse nick (gouge) is damage and as such it will only receive a details grade and ( in the past) only if you requested a details grade. It could simply be holdered as "Genuine" or it could be holdered as UNC Details. PCGS will not assign a numeric grade to damaged coins. If it is not genuine then it won't be holdered at all of course.

If it does come back details graded it will probably be UNC details damage. I cannot make a fair assessment because honestly you never really provided detailed close up photos of the coin to determine condition and if it was/has damage/cleaned etc. I do have faith that the coin is legitimate, it would be awesome to discover a 200+ year old coin of our nations early history (Me being a social studies teacher I cherish stuff like that). Hopefully coin comes back from PCGS legitimate and problem free (From 1 NY'er to another).
Good luck.

Quote: There is one on PCGS that graded MS 64 and mine is in better condition except the 2 nicks Yours is not even close to better condition as you say, the hair in front of the ear is almost worn smooth on yours. I also see some differences in the hair and look at the distance between the L and I.

The best you can hope for is UNC Details and AU Details is my bet if the coin is genuine. As Bobby pointed out the hair detail in your coin is notably different than is typically encountered on lightly circulated pieces. As you noted earlier this could be attributed to a Late Die State and/or improper striking characteristics.

Your coin will not grade MS under any circumstances.
Your coin will receive a "details" grade because of the rim gouge at the 7 o'clock position on the obverse. It will not go away. The gouge can be professionally repaired but the repair is not undetectible. The coin will always be a "problem" coin.

AU Details (Damage) Considering where you found it, you should be ecstatic no matter what it grades.

Dignit,
Most of the coins that I have seen that have been recovered after being in the ground for an extended time show some signs of environmental damage, corrosion, pitting, etc. How do you explain why this coin after being in the ground for what could be 200 years looks like a coin that was stored in a protected environment?

Slider,
gold is the most nonreactive element and doesn't corrode, tarnish, etc.
