Have a look at the recent US Marshal Service half dollar and the silver dollars for the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Each is reflective of the current organization, not what it was when it started. There's absolutely nothing wrong with depicting historic and modern images of people/places/things on commemorative coins. I like it if it's done well. However, using a coin to promote a federal agency going beyond its intended purpose is not the same thing. Quote:

Putting a cultural theme on a NPS coin caused me not to purchase it, so I think they failed in that regard when it comes to me. I think the sales would be much better if they depicted another iconic US landmark on that side of the coin. Our country is made up of many rich and diverse cultures. I'd be all for a commemorative series celebrating these cultures. I just don't think it's a good idea to dilute one theme with another, no matter how well intended it may be. It makes for coins that are ho-hum as opposed to spectacular. |

The mint has a table they use to price their gold coins based on the spot price of gold in $50 increments. They evaluate pricing on Wednesday. If a coin is released when the price of gold is $1230 an ounce the price of the coin was based on the a spot price of $1200-1249.99 and will remain steady until spot price falls to $1199.99 or less, or rises to $1250.00 or more. I'm sure it can get a little more complex than this, but if the average of all closing gold prices over the previous week is higher or lower than the range they are currently priced at, the price of the coins move up or down with it. If the price exits that current price range for just a day or two, the price of the coin will not change. It is based on spot price average for the week. On a $5 gold commemorative the amount is will go up or down is $12.15 for each level.

Got in @ 9:01, done by 9:03. Bought the three coin proof set and the three loose unc coins. USM040202xx. Doesn't seem that popular today, most loyal customers must've gotten tired of the mint shenanigans this year.

I agree for such beautiful parks they struck out on these lackluster designs. I guess after 50 ATBs they ran out of pretty designs.

I bought 2 unc half, 2 proof half and 1 each of the silver dollars. But not because the coins were great in any way...just my usual order to fill my set of proof and unc OGP Silver Dollars and Half Dollars, plus my extra set of CAPS Album half dollars.

Bought the three-coin proof set, plus the unc. dollar and half. I think the gold piece is the best of the lot, while the dollar and half are fine.
Personally, I think this year's two gold commemoratives have been some of the best modern U.S. coin designs. I'm excited to see how the NPS $5 looks in hand.
