I bought the 3 coin proof set yesterday. While I agree with much of the views expressed about the quality of designs, I am super excited to be purchasing my first gold coin. I think the gold coin is really a nice looking design and I hope the excitement continues when I have it in hand.

Before I buy this set, could someone please explain why that cow is standing in front of a giant piece of broccoli?
Or why that child is napping with a frog and some ferns?

Cow = buffalo
broccoli = geyser
kid napping = discovering a frog
I think those designs are appropriate but Carmen Miranda not so much
I will add I have zero interest in these....

The John Muir portrait isn't so hot either. Looks like the engraver gave up when they got to the beard. I don't think they give any consideration to how well a drawn design can be transformed into an engraving.

I've become bored with governmental agencies and institutions as commemorative themes. There's a lot more to America than the poobahs and their pets and I'd like to see less self aggrandizement from the powers that be. The America the Beautiful Quarter series addressed the subject and the issues which were not directly related to the NPS were created by a much higher authority.

freddo30, I think your observation is spot on. The problem with commemoratives in general is that they are issued in order to raise money for something. Some work well, but others end up being kind of self serving. It would be nice to have some commemoratives issued which did not raise any money at all. I love what they've done with the Sacagawea dollar series and the ATB series. I think another good series would be "America the Free", but some people might actually object to that in this day and age.

And I'm bored with the Old Faithful geyser and the bison always being the "go to" subject matter of any coin depicting Yellowstone National Park.

This is the first I have seen these coins or the thread.
Some of the designs remind me of sugar and hamburgers.
Sugar is (too!) great on/in many things. A burger is always more than welcome at my table.
But mix the two together and you get a something very weird indeed.
Politics belongs in Legislative bodies so we can all enjoy more red tape. I would like to see them leave it out of coin design.
Personally I like the designs on the OBV and REVs of all of these. But to me, sugar and burgers just don't make a good combination.
I wish we had people/mindset of Weinman's, Saint-Guaden's, Fraser's, and Gasparro's creative quality still working for the mint. Their ideas have proven timeless. Where are the modern masters?

The always gets me when they offer two, three or more piece commemorative sets. Since I collect gold dollars and Charlotte and Dahlonega gold, which never gets any bigger than a $5 gold piece, I can live with the size of $5 gold piece here quite nicely.

Finally opened the box of NPS coins from the Mint. Nothing to get too excited about, might be a waste of money after all. They'll show up on the Bay cheaper than the Mint's price within the year, generally speaking prices on modern commemoratives have softened greatly in the last two years. Might be the last commemoratives I'll buy from the Mint, not at all interested in next year's Lions Club and Boys' Town offering.

When it comes to commemoratives, I decided to just buy what appeals to me and skip what doesn't. My expectation is that they'll go down in value. It doesn't really matter because I don't plan on selling.
