Another example .. In my Dansco century of nickels album, at the end of the buffalo nickel page there are four empty spots. I just had to fill them with something

Much of the colorized coins look nice. I am just not a fan of them.

I never liked them.
That said, there are definitely some nice ones out there. Canadadian bullion comes to mind.. I am a silver hoarder and I love to diversify the stuff, but I do not like to pay huge premiums above what the standard markup from spot commands. So, for bullion.. sure, as long as it is high-quality (Canadia burning maple leaf and certain holographic art comes to mind).
But the Elvis coins aren't cheesy like many, so I think you did a good thing. I think stuff like that - when very near face value - is perfect for giving away, like for children at shows and such.

GR58.. I must admit, it is refreshing to see a nickel album that doesn't bore me to tears! Very appropriate in my opinion.

Colorized coins aren't my cup of tea, but I encourage everyone to follow their heart's desire. It certainly doesn't hurt anyone, and it reduces the competition for the ones I want.

I have a few Norwegian Kroner which have been gold and silver plated, just like those State Quarters, and those are quite stylish. I really like such coins, as it makes for really nice eye-candy if done properly. I do know that Canada issued quite some coins with a bit of paint on them (and I know because I have them). For example, quarters with a red maple leaf and those are ok. Just a bit of paint to stand out, but keep it stylish, please. However, there are also coins that are completely colorized. They're sold as for example silver collectors items and I really don't like those, they look a tad childish and usually kitschy to me. If I buy a silver coin, then I want to see that it's silver and shiny. I don't want to see a layer of paint with the face of Elvis on them, sorry... and a total nightmare would be a sticker on a coin. No stickers on my coins! So in case I was where GR58 was, I would probably have bought the quarters and maybe the Sac dollar, and left Elvis in the building.

I am decidedly not of like mind with anyone who would alter any collectible item for their own crass commercial purpose. This includes mints worldwide that have introduced gimmickry, kitch and pure nonsense into the vast realm of numismatics. Regardless of how artistically elaborate or eye appealing some of these efforts may be, they are *not* an improvement on the original. With the vast amount of dreck produced in this country and others with no other purpose than to sit on a shelf or in an album, is there *really* a need for more? I Feel So Bad for Elvis who might be aghast to see how his image has been co-opted in so many ways for the noble purpose of making money.

I have just one colorized coin, and it's from RCM It is part of my "gimmicky" coin sub-collection, which contains coins with the following gimmicks: 1) Incuse design (US $2.50 and $5.00) 2) Bimetallic (US $10.00 Library of Congress, and others) 3) Coins with holes (DK 5 kronor, etc.) 4) Odd shapes (square, etc.) 5) Ultra high relief (2009 US $20) 6) Colorized (aforementioned RCM coin) 7) Rounded coins (US baseball dollar) 8) Coins with stuff glued on (aforementioned RCM coin -- it kills two birds with one stone) 9) Extra large or small ( 5-oz libertad, 1100s Hungarian denar -- at 9mm) 10) others that I've forgotten for now.

I don't like them and consider them P.M.D. Even some foreign countries that have official government issued coins like that are a turn off for me.

Mmmmm-mmm, those last three posts have so much momentum left over that I'm gonna jump back in the water and surf this wave..
because I feel ya on the gimmicks, and I feel ya on the official government issues, especially when they are official issues with a denomination that do not count as legal tender in the very country from which it was issued. But somehow I just couldn't HELP myself when I first laid eyes on the 2015 Cook Islands Silver $2 Space Time Continuum "coin".
The best part is, while I lamented at my teenage daughter and her friend that once I had it I realized I cannot play with it (it balances and has a magnetic ball that fits in the center), one of them suggested someone should make a copy of it that we can play with.
Ahh, gimmicks.. they aren't really "coins" at all, now, are they? Which is actually the point, here, is it?

I knew there would be some strong opinions on these I have to wonder if this might be one of those cases where years from know many collectors will think Oh no ... I should have added a few of those to my collection. For example ... Hobo nickels. My collection has a little of every thing from ancient to modern counter stamped to error to counterfeit I feel ... don't be to serious all the time. Have fun with the hobby. Can you spot the colorized coin in this picture?

Can you spot the colorized coin in this picture Like a poodle at a cat show, it is sort of hard to miss. And equally out of place [imho]. But of course anyone is free to make their collection as quirkily personal as they choose. But give me a nice genuine toner anytime, and THAT is true, honest numismatic colorization- !

Yuck, I really don't like them.
One of the things I love about coins is their longevity. You never know when you might have a coin that could last 1,000 years or more. Painted coins by definition won't last long. The paint will degrade and crack and eventually fall off.

For colourised coins, I generally either don't mind them or even like them if it is just a single coulour or two as an accent or simple design element. Coins with fully colourised pictures taking up entire sides just remind me of Pogs from when I was a kid, which makes it hard to take them seriously.
