Hey, so my brother is about 9 years old, and I figure that's a good time to start him on a coin collection. What would everyone recommend as a Xmas present to get him into the hobby?

Thank you for responding, I was actually maybe looking to give him closer to 40$ in value, but that would be a great idea as well.

Get him some cheap but old coins . The old dates should excite him . A Red Book , magnifying glass and a Lincoln Cent folder 1941 pds - 1958 pd , and lastly a mixed roll of wheat cents . He'll be thrilled putting the pennies in the folder by date and mint .

9 years old, hmmmm - I'm with T-BOP on this one. get a few Whitman coin folders, like cents and nickels, then get him some rolls to look through so he can start filling up the holes. Then he can show everybody "his collection".

What are his interests? $40 could get him started on building sets from circulation, or a few really nice coins to blow his mind. Provided he isn't going to turn around and spend them, I'd recommend something cool. At 9 years old I was obsessed with old coins; I would have loved something like a common date, high grade Peace or Morgan dollar, a 3 cent (nickel or silver), or a Roman or Greek coin.

Now that you mention it, he is very interested in war, and war weapons

You can always get him some world coins, too. It's always fun to see the designs from different areas of the world. Also, it's fun to learn where those countries are.
Rest in Peace

If he's interested in war stuff (me too), then T-BOP's latest suggestion sounds good. They are directly tied to WWII and the need to change compositions. Also, some WWII coins of the Third Reich would be cool to add for contrast.

My 9 year old was thrilled with a mixed bag of a couple hundred world coins. Had a handful from the 19th century and covered all sorts of interesting places in the map. Maybe the spark will really ignite someday, but I presume it will take a few experiences with coins over a few years before he finds a passion.

Has your brother expressed interest in coin collecting? If so, great, if not, don't push it on him. He may be interested later on. Use the KISS rule and keep it simple for now. He will probably enjoy the time you spend with him more than the coins at this age. Good luck.

I agree with T-bop. Give him some coins assuming he's interested in collecting. Otherwise wait for the bug to bite him.
World coins or US coins are excellent suggestions. How about some War Nickels. I like the 11 coin sets in card holder with pictures.
