This looks like fun. I just bought 2 boxes of nickels to search. I also want to see if any varieties are worth keeping, too.
Do folks bother with error/varieties when bank roll searching nickels?

And, Diy89Nurm7, other than the 1990-D NO FS and the 1975-D with the misplaced mintmark, I really don't look for varieties with the nickels... now most of us are going to be pulling the dates with known varieties anyways (i.e.: 1943/2-P, 1954S S over D, 1955D D over S) since they're pre-1960 dated coins. Grabbed another 3,560 nickels on Friday, and have to say it was my worst batch of nickels EVER! 10 pre-60s total. Yes, TEN out of 89 rolls! I got a box which yielded just SIX and no 2009 coins... the other nickels did yield three 2009-Ds and there was a semi-key 1949-S amongst them, but that was it.  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Is it a given that FS nickels of most years are worth tucking away? I see high values for FS in most years, though often only in higher grades on recent coins.

Well, most BU older coins you find CRH are worth tucking away regardless of how many steps they have, but certain dates certainly are more worthy with FS as you've noticed. A few of dates from the 1960s are not known to exist with full steps! It is mostly pre-1990 dated BU coins you'll want to look for the FS in. In 1990, they made a new master die with six full steps, so FS coins are generally much more common from that point on. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! I searched for a $22 Nickels MWR but I founds a 10 Pre-60s and 2 Silver War Nickels. Pre-60s 1941 1941S 1946D 1948 1949 1949S Key Dates!! 1951D 1955D 1957D 1959D 1943P And 1944D Silver War Nickels.   HAPPY HUNTING!!'  Edited by Pancake

Did 4 rolls today... yes only 4... a 1946 and a 1951 were the only two coins worth saving... Would've been more but I somehow ended up with 20 rolls from an 5 year old dump of mine so I did not count those...  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Did my first Nickel CRH on a 50 roll box today! Surprised myself by finding 58 keepers, not to mention FS: 1 1891 Liberty G4 3 Buffaloes (1928, 1936, 1936 D 4 legs) 4 Canadian Nickels (1985, 1986, 1994, 1999) 1 1977 Swiss 20 Rappen 49 Jeffersons 1939-1959, including --1942 P, 1944 P --1954 D/D; 1956 D/D; 1957 D/D (D/D need verification) 1930s (1) 1940s (31) a 1940 P looks XF/AU 1950s (17) There were some newer GEM BUs I will hang on to, some nicely toned, too, and some full steps Can't wait to try the 2nd box.... Opened 2nd box. Surprisingly 60 good finds! 3 Liberty: 1893 (G), 1903 (VG), 1912 (G) 8 Buffalo: 1923 P, 1935 P, 1936 P, 1937 P 3 1939s: 2P 1D F/VF 16 1940s: including 2 Silver (1 is 1945 s XF/AU) 22 1950s 8 Canadians: including 1 MS 2005 WWII commemorative Only 1 2009 among 200 rolls! Otherwise, looks like I found a good fishing hole. Thanks for all the guidance...     |
