Went through an even $200 worth (4000 nickels) last Wednesday and found 34 pre-60s including a Semi-Key 1949-S... One of the CWR had 4 proofs in it, and several high end BU coins from the 1990s including a couple of 1997-Ds - obviously from someone's collection. Also found 6 2009-Ds.

The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome!

Yesterday, I purchased another 4,000 nickels from 5 different banks... As you may recall, I found a little hoard of 17 pre-60s in 1 CWR on March 24th which included a 38-S and 5 War Nickels (42-P, 42-S, 44-P, 44-D, 45-S)... At the time, I theorized these may have come out of someone's old Jefferson nickels 1938-1961 coin folder as there were no duplicates. 20 of the rolls I purchased yesterday were from that same branch of the bank I got those from... and, believe it or not, there were three more rolls just like that one...
Combined, there were 36 pre-60s in those three rolls, including 7 more War Nickels (43-P, 43-S, 44-S, 45-P, 45-P, 45-D, 45-S) along with semi-key 1946-S, 1948-S, 1949-S, 1951-S, and 1958 coins. As you can see, between the two groups, I got the entire run of War Nickels save for the 1943-D and a duplicate 1945-P and 1945-S. Not to mention the 1945-D and a 1939 Philly coin in the batch had the same kind of obverse scratches a few of the coins from the previous roll had. Combining all of the finds from the four rolls, the only 10 coins missing from the 1938-1961 Jefferson Set were: 38-D, 39-D, 39-S, 43-D, 46-D (but there were 2 49-Ds), 50, 50-D, 52 (but there were 2 52-Ss), 55, and 56-D. So, very obviously, these were from the same collection and two of them likely had the wrong coins in the folder holes. I'm guessing the common 56-D was in the collection too, but likely ended up in another roll.

As fate would have it though, another CWR from that group, but very likely not from the collection, had a 1943-D in it - it was heavily reprocess plated as you can see... In fact, there were only 3 pre-60s total in those other 17 rolls from said batch.

Amongst the other 3200 coins searched were 31 more pre-60s including a 1919 Buffalo, another 1945-D, another 1948-S, and a 1970-S Proof.

On the day, I ended up with a staggering 70 pre-60 coins including the aforementioned 9 War Nickels and other goodies. Remarkably, I only found 1 2009-D amongst the coins - my lowest total ever for $200+ of nickels searched.

Went through 5400 nickels yesterday, only found 31 pre-60s, but amongst them was a 1923 Buffalo, an AU 1938 Jefferson, and 1942-P & 1944-D War Nickels. I also found 1961 and 1969-S Proofs along with 5 2009-Ds.

The last time I got a box of quarters from my bank, I decided to also try a box of nickels. I hadn't searched nickels in years, but I heard my sister-in-law was looking for some for sets she was making for her grandkids, so I figured I'd help out. I have a complete set but I also started a second set of Jefferson's years ago which I abandoned, so I pulled that out and made a want-list for me too.
I found four for me: 41'S, 42', 48'D, and a 59'.
I found 39 for my sister-in-law, which included 11 pre-1960's. One was a 43'P War Nickel. Many coins she listed needed two copies (multiple grand-kids) and I was able to find most of the post-1964 items. The jar I filled actually has about 60 coins in it because I gave her multiples of some dates so she could pick out the nicer conditions.
I couldn't find any 2009's. Are these still 'short' (I thought the original shortage fad was over by now). Also, I found one 1959 (for me). She needs a 1958 and a 1959 (plains). I found lots of 58 and 59 "D"s, but just that one Philly. Also had trouble finding 1965's and 1982-D's, but did finally acquire a couple.
Oh, also found 7 Canadian nickels and one 'D' (undated) Buffalo.

Yes, all 2009 Nickels (and Dimes) are still VERY short. I find a 2009-D Nickel every 700 coins or so. I'm fortunate to live in an area where they were released in decent quantity. I have no problem selling a circulated roll of 2009-Ds on ebay for $20+ shipping... and 2009-P Nickels are extremely hard to find for pretty much everyone still - I'm around 1 found every 14,000 coins. If I had a circulated roll to sell, I'd have no problem getting $40+ for it.

Been slowly, but surely organizing my finds... was closely examining the 1943-P nickels I've found the past year or so a couple of weeks ago and one caught my eye pretty quickly. Was having trouble getting a nice photo of it, but finally got one today...

Lower grade, but still nice to possess a 1943/2-P nickel!
