Quote: This morning, I looked in the trunk of my car and discovered I forgot to open two mint-wrapped rolls. Lucky for me, one of them contained a 1945-P. Outstanding!

What impressive luck! I've thought about that roll of half dollars I got a few years ago that had that 1968-D and wondered "was that the only silver in the box or were there multiple, possibly even dozens of them?"

Quote: has any nickel roll searcher here found a Shield nickel? I did a quick search. Plenty of posts wishing and asking, but no finds. I might have to do a deeper search later.

That would be an epic find considering Shield nickels are slightly smaller in diameter, IIRC.

Quote:has any nickel roll searcher here found a Shield nickel? Nope, never found a Shield nickel, or a V nickel for that matter. These days, I'm happy with a Buffalo nickel or a War Nickel. Speaking of which, I've noticed a sharp drop in pre-1960 finds in my area. I'm only getting 1 pre-1960 find once every 7 rolls in Loomis rolls. Customer rolls are a little better, but maybe one in 5 rolls. Not sure what's been sucking out the finds lately, but it's pretty sudden. The Loomis pennies are not doing very well, either. I've gone through 30 rolls of a box, and have had no finds whatsoever. The copper is also not great. Is anyone else seeing the same thing?

Been on a house painting tear and kids are back in school so my searches have calmed down a bit, but over the past couple of weeks we've found a handful of 58 P (not surprising as we're now living just outside of Philly), plus a 48 S, a 49 S (only the SECOND we've ever found which baffles me considering we've plucked TWO 39 Ds out of circ just this summer), and a couple 55 P too. Silver has been good with a War Nickel about every 30 rolls since the end of August. However it has been very difficult finding circulated rolls within a 20 mile radius of home. We still search those rolls because every so often one will have a single older Jefferson, which is where our 49 S came from. Weird and kinda deflating but I'm getting to know a few tellers here and they are on the lookout for customer wrapped and circulated rolls now.

Finally broke my dry spell of Buffalo nickels. Found one today in a Loomis roll, albeit a dateless one, but I'll take it. Gonna give it to daughter tomorrow. Cheers!

AllSeasons, my find rate for all pre-1960 nickels is about 1%. It does vary from batch to batch, though. You might just be encountering a small sampling problem, similar to gamblers experiencing mathematically-probable short runs that feel unusual.
Do you monitor the levels of other decades? It's certainly possible that the mint is starting to sort 1938-2003 nickels from LAP/2006+ nickels for retirement. The alloy is still the same, so they could just melt the old and mint the new.
