This nickel has me stumped because of the bowl shape,rim damage and unclear stamps in the center back. Is this some type of mint damage or post mint damage?

It is a coin that was struck with a very late stage die. This is just die wear. It is worn out. Very common on all coins minted during the 1980s.

BTW you can tell it is 1984 because 1) the mint mark is on the front, which started in 1968 AND 2) the Philedelphia mint did not use the P mint mark from 1946 to 1979.

struck from a very late stage worn out die. I have seen some of these crh.

It's worth keeping a few VLDS coins just to have them for comparison.
