Trying to narrow this 1888 I recently purchased down.

It's a VAM-9 for sure -- the clash is strong at the lips, nose and neck. The reverse clash (right wreath) is very faint but visible when you catch the luster right, but the clash on top of the eagle's right wing below N in IN GOD is quite easily visible.

VAM-9A should have a letter transfer @ back of curls but I cannot see that on this coin; on the other hand, 9B should show a doubling-like clash of the neck profile and I do not see that here either, even at 20x under the scope. (My USB camera bit the dust, so no scope pictures at the moment.) It also does not have the reverse die crack of the 9A.

All thoughts welcomed to help narrow this down. I am leaning towards a B but maybe a die state in between.

I don't think it's a 9. The orientation of the neck clash line doesn't line up with A or B. My best guess would be VAM-11A LDS. Hopefully Messydesk sees this. I'm sure he'll know what it is.

It appears to match my VAM-11A,though it's tough to tell whether the ear is doubled. I want to say that on the LDS they tend to be weakly-struck and the doubling on the lobe can be hard to see.

I'll check vs. 11A under the scope tonight! Thanks, you two.

Rescoped it & agree with diagnosis of 11A LDS. Updated my entry on it on SSDC Registry. Thanks to all!
