That's OK, Don. I can't even remember (because it took place over decades) how many times I thought and rethought how to organize all the varieties. And, even though the current system seems to me to be the most logical and easy of the lot, it's still no cakewalk. Some think it no better than Greek. In the reverses the entire group of 1858-59 reverse dies was sunk from a single punch. But the design on the punch gradually deteriorated. Then there was a semi-crazy Resident Engraver who repaired some flaws and not others in the dies. And, finally, the dies were not always put into the presses in the same order they were made. Yike!

No. 17. This is another one of Phil310's coins. My, My it has a bit of a problem, doesn't it! Of course, now that No. 16 has been identified, viper is free to immediately come back into the fray.

Right, Doug! How do you like that collapse? It's hard to find them bigger than that. It involves five leaves and is quite high in relief.
Next coin later this afternoon. It will be a challenge...

Yes, gidjit, you're the winner of this round. You'll probably get five more 1858s in the mail tomorrow (while you're waiting your turn to name another Mystery 1859). The coin shown was my stage 3 of both dies. Even stage 2 (my earliest) has significantly-worn dies. This die pair must have minted a ton of coins!
No. 19 comes tomorrow, either from me or Phil310, so stay tuned....

You are correct, Doug. (32+E33) This is one of those coins with an early die state on both obverse and reverse. No die cracks to help out. Would anyone want to point out the diagnostics Doug used to attribute this one?

While you're thinking about the diagnostics for No. 19, here's the next coin (No. 20).
