I like detective puzzles and deductive logic. My wife says I am picky. I prefer detail oriented. Goal is to find all die pairs. Currently missing 8. Found a few new pairs along the way this field still has a number of discoveries to be made. Ed

I like the whole design of the coin and that there are some many different Varieties and still being discovered. All I need is the stock to check out and the only way is stealing them from a Canadian source That last lot I received lasted a whole month of fun

I can't drool over a coin unless I know what the coin is ... what's a 383? Is it the one on p.282? Although I've sold, what to me are vanilla '59 coins, to a dealer friend from Okla, I've still got about 8-900 .. down from my well over 1000. Maybe the next time I'm feeling kind and gentle, I'll send them to Ed to have a look-see.

Yes, okiecoiner, Haxby PC59-383 is the coin from page 282 in the 2011 Charlton.
People identify the Vicky varieties by page number all the time, which is fine. I prefer to identify them by die number. As long as we have a catalog that gives an all inclusive order to the 1859's, why not use it?
There are a number of nice "old style obvious varieties" that don't have a page number in the 2011 Charlton, and they can't be added in nor given a page number. (page 282.5 ?) But they already have a generally accepted Haxby number, and every new variety found will get one also.
The reverses viper posted above give us a good example of the system Jim and Ed use in the catalog. One obverse die #38, paired with 4 reverse dies (E39, E39a, E39b, E39c). Catalog numbers 381, 382, 383, 384. They are listed in the chronological order that the dies were used with obverse 38. It's not really difficult to get used to once you give it a try.
Ed, maybe you can find those last 8 you need in okiecoiner's coins. That's great that you're so close to getting all the known dies. I've still got about 60 I'm looking for.

When we wrote the 2011 Charlton with the variety section in the back, we were finally limited to 80 pages (hence 80 coins) with at least one example of the "type" of varieties that were available for that date/Obverse. We had many more that we wanted to include, but space left us out. With the 1859's and every single reverse die with a hand-punched 9, there are at least that many varieties for the date, not counting the different Obverses used. There is no was to strike a punch/hammer EXACTLY on top of each other for 3 blows.

PC59-77-a1? (77a+P15a)
I just don't see anything to differentiate between obverse 77 and 77a
