First off, I am still fairly new to these boards, so I hope I posted this in the right forum. A friend of mine acquired this coin and asked me what I thought. I'm not sure so I am asking here. It's graded MS-61 but obviously has some type of marker or sharpie on the reverse. Will grading companies really grade a coin with marker on it? According to THIS coin, obviously so but want to make sure it's not some sort of counterfeit. I've personally never seen a coin defaced that isn't in a details holder. Thanks for any input. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Well they did note that it was a "spitting eagle" variety... Sorry not sure, but I agree that a bid splotch seems worthy of a details grade.

It's a shame because it's actually not a bad looking coin sans the graffiti.

Agree, should have been detailed. To me, an unappealing coin all round.

I agree, it's a details coin. I'm surprised NGC thought otherwise.

Now that's a great way to destroy an otherwise nice-looking coin and it seems like the damage is quite permanent. Not sure why NGC actually didn't do anything with it.

That is almost certainly toning, the coin was possibly glued to something and then removed. It is a bit ugly but I see no reason why it deserves a DETAILS grade. IMO, the submitter did that coin a great disservice by not submitting it for conservation prior to grading. Even a quick dip would have greatly improved the eye appeal.

I wonder if it isn't some type of stain that doesn't affect the integrity of the coin, wasn't intentionally done and thus why the grade. The more I look at it, it does appear to be a stain and not marker. I don't know. I would think that would still generate a details grade. I'm really confused by it. I appreciate all the input.

The obverse is very "baggy" and that does not merit a DETAILS label. The reverse has some ugly toning BUT plenty of coins have ugly toning; that also does not merit a DETAILS label.
IMO the low grade without a DETAILS label is correct.

I agree with the last two posters, biokemist6 and kanga. Again, thanks for the input.

Toning, not damage.

The holder is several years old. Is it possible the stain formed/darkened after the coin was slabbed. The stain wasn't visible when it was submitted and darkened later. This coin I think has been slabbed recently enough that it has a good chance of appearing in the NGC photos on the certification verification web page. If so does the NGC picture show the stain?

The image is not available via NGC's website. I'm not sure when NGC started photographing each coin, though. Some of my modern world coins don't have images either, so maybe it's just a hit-or-miss thing.

I have to wonder if what ever is on that coin, if it wasn't dark when NGC put it in the holder. And turned dark after.
Not sure what the status of this coin is.
Is the question weather the friend should return the coin.
Or is there a question on if anything can be done to take the stain away.

They started photographing all the coins about 7 or 8 years ago.
