The spread on early gold O mint $1 is unreal. Coins that bid around 275-350 are listed on the Bay for 500-600...and that's not even in MS. I know they're tough to find in nice condition, but come on... $300 above book? They're not THAT scarce. You can always get a '54 $3 O mint gold for "only" 1-2k...and that's for a details coin. Of course, that being the only NO-minted coin in the series, it commands a premium, much like its tiny trime brother coin from 1851, and the '39 reeded edge halves. There's some cheap early $1 O-mints on the Bay, a few sub-$300, but all are raw at that price save a mutilated NCS-slabbed coin. I'll have to settle for nice Lib Seated coinage instead :P

My picture for this one's almost as small as the coin itself. 1852-O dime PCGS# 4598 PCGS Coinfacts estimates that there's only about 400 of these that still survive, in or out of holders.

Gotta get a counterstamp or two in this thread ... Pretty, it's not, but it's loaded with character! Alfred Allen Dunk was a druggist in East Saginaw, Michigan in the 1870's. His business was consumed by fire in 1872, and he rebuilt it. He died in 1879 of a gall bladder ailment, yet his wife carried on the business. There are about a half dozen of his counterstamped coins as yet recorded. Below is pictured one of his advertisements ...

The Dunk counterstamp was on my want list for many years before I was able to score one at a show. Mr. Dunk had quite a sense of humor, it seems. The Camphorated Arnica, mentioned in his ad, was a house specialty that Dunk or his successor, a W.B. Moore, patented.
