Although they look similar, the two Chicago notes are Federal Reserve Bank Notes, not Nationals.

Quote: all of my national notes Nice group. Quote: Although they look similar, the two Chicago notes are Federal Reserve Bank Notes, not Nationals. Interesting, even though it says National Currency, makes sense as they are FRBs.

Quote: My only National Note so far. I understand the confusion. Your note says National Currency at the top and new collectors think these FRBNs are Nationals. They are not. Small-size Nationals are 6 digit notes with a charter number printed twice on the face. Federal Reserve Bank Notes have 8 digit serial numbers with the District letter printed 4 times on the face. The below note is a Federal Reserve Bank Note, and not a National. You'll notice the letter "J" (Kansas City District) printed 4 times on the face. You'll also notice it has an EIGHT digit serial number. This note is a small-size National. It has a SIX digit serial number and the charter number (4949) is printed boldly at each end.

Quote: thanks for the info Steve is that also why there is a black mark over the names I see a black strip below the Governor's signature on the $100 FBRN, if that's what you mean. The black strip is to hide the word President (Bank President), which is the typical signature in that location.
