I threw in a buzzer-beater bid on this and was pleased to knock it down for all of $211!

And I'm pretty sure John Dillinger didn't try to rob it.

Probably too big of a city for the crooks of the day. Better to stay with the small Midwest banks.

Without looking it up, I'd buy uncirculated notes like that all day long for that price.

Very Nice!

Thanks, guys. When it comes to nationals, I collect large size by type but don't really collect small size except when real values like this come along - I maybe have 15-20 65s and 66s like this, along with several very low SNs. But no, I don't collect by city or state, that would overwhelm me. Mostly I collect federal issues and that should keep me busy until the cows come home.

I've always been fascinated with these small size "almost" Nationals from the Philippines printed by The Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington DC. The McKinley portrait was used on many U.S issued notes during the 1900's. The orange backs were similar in color to the backs of the high dollar small size gold certificates. The Philippine Islands were also the test bed for the small size notes we have used continuously for 90 years!

Frog...

The best I can tell the BEP started printing small notes for the PI sometime around 1908. The savings in printing costs for small size notes would have been obvious but the issue of public acceptance was up in the air. After some 15 years of use in the PI the decision was made to go small here on the mainland. A public awareness campaign was initiated and advertising notes were printed in the same size as the new currency and distributed to banks and merchants to help educate the public.

Those advertising notes are collectibles themselves. They turn up on ebay now and then.
