It's impossible to tell you where this coin received the toning, although a metal detector find is very possible since the clad coinage is often found looking exactly like this one. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 12/19/2016 11:06 am When cladding is missing from the larger coins, the thickness is reduced and the strike is weaker: The strike on your coin is normal. It was found outdoors that altered the color. Sometimes even the simplest things alters coins. Storing them in paper envelope will alter the color in time. Some albums will alter color. Sulfur in the air will tone coins yellow. Heat can alter coins. Just a normal half dollar that is dark.
