It is on the previous page, but this coin is a brother to @louie's first post today: a Horngroschen of the German Landgraviate of Hesse (minted in Cassel). The attribution is Levinson I-108. It was a 2018 pick-up for me.

Finding it very interesting to see similarly designed horngroschen in different German states (Saxony, Hessen) at this time. I'm curious if anyone knows the history of this type, and its spread?

Back on p.281-285 of this thread, we saw the batzen denominated coins come (and then go) during the 16th c., with a wide spread mostly south of where the horngroschen was minted (Bavaria and Swabia). Also, there was no consistency of design with the batzen denominated coins...each state had its own design, sometimes just 10 miles away.

In Levinson's book he alludes to the similarly designed coins such as the Horngroschens.
He suggests that maybe mintmasters might have traveled between the different mints.
They just used the same designs but employed mint marks to differentiate between the
mints. Maybe a mint master relocated to Hesse from Saxony resulting in the similar
coinage. There are three known varieties of Horngroschen for Hesse, all rare or very rare.
The Horngroschens for Saxony number 24 including varieties. Of those 9 are very rare to
extremely rare.

very nice additions today

the degree of organization is indeed remarkable, and it became even more so with the introduction of the taler system and the Double-headed Reichsadler on the coins of the imperial cities

These are the kinds of speculations I find very interesting. I don't know the history there, but this would suggest cooperation at the state level between Saxony and Hesse. If they were not dynastically entwined, maybe they were strong trading partners?

In the low countries there was an attempt to harmonize the coinage between Brabant and FLanders even earlier, in the 1380s if I recall correctly.

Decent coin. As luck would have it,the planchet crack affects the date.

Certainly the legends are in great shape. I find it amusing when the date (Roman) takes more than 180 degrees of the legend!

For anyone who may have an interest, I noticed there is a 1466 Freiberg horngroschen that has failed to get the opening bid (100 euro) in two consecutive WAG auctions. https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...e91a8202dc7d

Here is another Horngroschen from Saxony. It was minted at Leipzig and is attributed as Levinson I-103a and Krug 1436.
