Got a few ebay bucks to spend & randomly came across this new listing. Seller coincidentally happened to have pictures of the date & MM areas. Didn't even pay much attention to the listing except the O MM pic was the listing pic and that pinched shape of the interior MM caught my eye because it's a good sign of OMMs. And then there was that big ol' die gouge that jumped up and beat me in the head after I clicked on the listing... Looks like VAM 33A to me, an O/O variety with obverse die gouge in the hair. I'd grade it a raw mid AU, maybe cleaned. Definitely a 33A which is not something you see everyday. I've been looking at 1883-Os for several years and I can count how many I've seen on one hand since picking one up almost two years ago. If you didn't pick this one up I think @paleoguy45 may still have a nice MS example.

Yup. And this one could me MS. Better pics are needed but it's a pretty weak strike

Weird. When I click on it I get the same thing when Bobby zaps a listing

Nice find on a cool, under-appreciated variety! These tend to come in MS, but tough to find in higher MS grades and with a decent strike. Often times they are weakly struck with flat stars it seems. They do come in PL and DMPL though! Though not extremely common, they are not hard to find with a little bit of looking. One of my favorites ;) 'grats.

Sorry Dave, I just read your comment about availability. You are correct that they can be tough to find at times. I always seem to find them in either MS 62 or PL. Kind of strange conditional availability... maybe it's just me. I think the nicest one I've seen was an MS-65PL or 64DMPL. My nicest is 63PL. Seems to carry a very slight premium, though minimal. Sold two on ebay in the past few years, one an ANACS 61, and one an NGC 63 I believe, both of which sold for a little more than I expected. Now if only I could just find a darned VAM-33 without the gouges!

Photo turned up blurry at bottom, just noticed, but this will get the general point across. Nice coin! Still stand by my AU grade though :) Obverse is toned more than the reverse, both a reddish copper color.
