In my opinion, this is an underappreciated coin in the series.

Actually it's one of the very few Jefferson's that is considered a key. I don't think the 1939-D is underappreciated so much as that very few big dollar buyers pay any attention whatsoever to the whole series.

Funny my LCS guy said just the other day, "I just never liked or got into the Jeffersons." I think its likely because it didn't change for 60+ years.

Underappreciated was a poor choice of words. I agree with you moxking. I replaced a BU 1950 D in my 7070 with this one a few months ago. Mint state examples of this coin aren't easy to find for a decent price.

MS63 not full steps. The 1939D is one of the priceyer coins in the series in MS. my MS65FS 1950D cost $15.00 my MS65 1939D was many multiples of that

This one is the 1940 REV variant. It has a serif on the top of the S in PLURIBUS, and the steps have well defined sides (vertical lines at start and end).

Am I seeing a rotated mintmark, or is it the lighting? Split upper serif?
