... mostly.... As a follower of Daoism, I see "in god we trust" as an obvious pro-western slant, but take no offense what-so-ever--its become a tradition I suppose in this land. If it were proposed today, 225+ years after the establishment of the Union, yes I would be 100% offended. But god is on our money, in our pledge, and ask long as I'm not forced to to pray to any god, or pledge to any flag for that matter, I am perfectly okay with having "god" all over the place and taking my hat off at ballgames for the flag. To me, I don't favor any westerner god over another and honestly couldn't care less which god, if any, you choose to worship as long you dont push your views on me *cough* door to door "missionaries" *cough*....... and its aesthetically placed on a coin As to the Constitutional part of it, you are absolutely right and not mistaken at all, Hughmistake. It is compeltely agaisn't the believes of the founders to have god, any god, involved in government business. This eliminates the problems of rulers who think they are here to do gods work through war, taxes, imprisonments etc etc etc. Several of the founders were actually athiests, publically or privately. BUT, the people also have the NATURAL rights that trump any 'artifical laws' of man, the constitution included (ie see slavery....) If the majority of people support it or dont care either way AND no one is harmed it is fine for the government to place "god" on a coin. Until that dime in your pocket suddenly jumps up and cuts someone across the neck, and uses the 'god told me to do it' excuse, god is, allowed on the coin due to the universal laws that apply to all men and instituions. At least that my humble, or not so humble depending on your reading of this post, opinion on the matter but anyways....Any METS fans out there? How about putting Johan Santana on the penny?!?

I agree that you shouldn't waste too much energy getting offended over it. The government does far worse things. However, you shouldn't just sit back and let the government infringe on your rights. While one thing they do might not expressly harm anyone, it could pave the way for future encroachments. But then again, you have to pick and choose your battles.

GFR3, I used to be one of those door to door missionaries. Maybe you should give them a chance. If you want to test your own beliefs, try sharing them with someone else. If you really want to test them, try doing it in a country that is governed by a religious organization. I gave it a try and trust me I now understand the purpose of those ammendments. The constitutional amendments were put into place to keep a religious organization from taking control of our government. Most of the original colonists fled to America to get away from religious prosecution. These amendments are a preventative measure to keep things like religious prosecution and holocausts from happening. They are measures to keep religious groups like the Taliban from seizing control of the government like in Afghanistan. Reading the constitution isn't enough, you need to understand the historical intent of it. As for the original question of this forum. I think we should mix things up a little. I guess it would be OK if we took "In God We Trust" off the coin. We can just put a picture of God on there. No really I like the idea of Reagan, but if he wouldn't want it than not. Lady Liberty would be my second choice. I think it's time for a change also. P.S. Don't worry I don't knock on doors anymore.

NGiles, I may have misread your post, but the founding fathers did NOT place In God We Trust on coins. This was done nearly 100 years after they wrote the Constitution. Here's the Treasury Department FAQ link on that: http://www.ustreas.gov/education/fa...-trust.shtmlI would have to vote against Reagan on any coin (except maybe the Presidential dollar) for many of the reasons that mycrob states. My top choice would be to return to Liberty - or some representation of Liberty. If we want to include historical figures I think that Teddy Roosevelt and Martin Luther King would be good choices.

Patrick, Thanks for correcting me before I looked too stupid. I deleted that to hide all evidence of my ignorance. Looks like I have some more research to do.

I agree that if we have to put a person on a coin, it should be Teddy Roosevelt. Martin Luther King, Jr. should not be on any circulating coin or bill--he already has a national holiday devoted to him. (And yes, I know that there is the holiday George Washington's Birthday, which means that George Washington is honored on two circulating coins, a bill, and has a holiday, but, I mean, it's George Washington lol).

Actually hugemistake2003, the Federal Holiday is "President's Day" and commemorates both Washington's and Lincoln's birthday. So, Washington only has 1/2 a holiday.

Actually, the opposite is true. Most people are familiar with the holiday known as "Presidents' Day," but it is actually codified in United States Law as "George Washington's Birthday." (United States Code Title 36).

I acutually think Dr King would make a great coin (no offense to General Washington of course). With the exception of James Madison (also not on a coin btw...) did more for the cause of freedom and liberty then any other individual in the nations history. Many have come close (SBA, Jefferson, to name but a few) but few can match the political changes the Dr King put forth. I would not mind a coin bearing the likeness of Dr King

I agree with you Richard on the longevity of Lincoln, Its been done, move on. Lady Liberty has been done, as I have said before and I will say it again and again. FLAGS! For example : Dont tread on me flag, mint them for 2 years then move to the next design and so forth

How about putting each mayor on a penny. have several hundred different types per year and this way after a few years and new mayors come into office, always have new people on the cent. Collecting the cent would be so much more fun and challenging if you dramatically increase number of designs per year.

If it ever came to this, I would not collect them, ever! It would be the Mint's equivalent of "going postal" (sorry just carl!). Well, maybe not ever...
