Actually, if you are bringing coins from the US into Canada, there is a different limit for 1 and 5 cent (penny and nickel) coins. For all the others (dimes, quarters, half dollars/50 cent pieces, dollar coins) the limit is $10,000. However, for 1 and 5 cent coins, as stated in Section 82.2 in this PDF document
https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2...1-part82.pdf the limit is $100 and is restricted to solely educational or numismatic purposes. Meaning, you cannot show that you will be exporting the 1 and 5 cent coins to Canada for their metal value. However, silver
War Nickels are exempt from this $100 restriction, as stated in section 82.3d in the document.
The US government is afraid that you might profit from the copper content of the pennies, that is why they made this special restriction. The government is selfish!
