I should purchase. I bought a coin book to add nickels to. Now I need to go and buy some from my local bank. Any suggestions on how many to buy to help get my coin book started?

Try one box of nickels. Again, which book did you buy?
Rest in Peace

If you can't purchase a box of Nickels , just get ten rolls from the bank you do business with . that should be enough to get you started with your book .

Something to consider:

I had a 2015 Objective to create a Circulation Set of Jefferson nickels. The target was 90% complete if I recall correctly. What I found is that if you don't care about grade, you can get that done pretty quickly. I think I remember that after 3 boxes (6000 coins) that you could reach that goal. However, with time and effort, you can build a pretty decent collection where your late 50s through present are AU through BU (with a few exceptions). Coins from the late 30s through the mid/late 50s at VF or better, many being AU. I think I did around 23 boxes that year and found all but 8 dates/mms. So if you are more patient, you can find nice collectable specimens. I did a box every other week or so, looking for Variety and Error coins as well, while building rolls by date/mm. So for $100 investment, rolled every other week, you should be able to build something similar.

Also keep in mind, if you are using a folder style, once you pop a coin into a spot, replacing it later can lead to weaker retention. If you have an album, you can upgrade more often without fear of over working a coin hole. Good luck!!

I think around $1000 to $1500 in nickel rolls over a period of time should finish your book, if you go to a good bank you don't need to spend as much. Try banks in more rural areas for older coins, and if you want new BU coins try banks in large cities.

I started a Jefferson nickel album 1938-2003 for the New Year and through only 58 rolls (one box + 8 rolls) I had 113 holes filled with 44 left to go (I'm not doing proofs at this point).

The oldest was a '38 and I found one War Nickel. I might add that these were all Machine-Wrapped Rolls (MWRs). If your bank has them, Customer-Wrapped Rolls (CWRs) may lead to better finds but it's not a definite by any means.

I don't think the amount you buy at once will effect the outcome too much. At the best, I did 5 rolls a night, so I could have just bought 10 rolls every two days instead of a full 50 roll box.

The good thing in this case is that there aren't too many known errors/varieties to look for/distract you and some of those you need some decent magnification to see (that I haven't gotten going yet).

I hope this helps. Happy Hunting!

It takes a lot of time and effort, but if you have the patience, you likely will eventually complete that set.

Over the past year, I've gone through about 450,000 nickels. I'm in Southern California, so the S-minted coins are more easily found than for others, while P-mint coins are more difficult. My hardest to find coins to date:

1.1950-D (0)
2.1939-D (1)
3.1955(P)(2)
4.1943-D (3)

I've also found five each of 1938-D, 1938-S, and 1939-S. Others which are hard to find out here include 1942-P, 1942-S, 1945-D, 1950(P), and 2009-P.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

You can start with any amount of nickels ... a single $2 roll will put some coins into your folder/album.

Concur that if you accept any grade a handful of $100 boxes (say 4 or 5) will complete better than 50% of the circulation strike series 1938 to present.

What takes time and perseverance is finding the handful (10 or so) difficult to obtain coins ...

I completed a circulation strike set from local bank rolls and it took me 320,800 coins searched .... thats $16,040 or 160.4 boxes.

It's great fun ... enjoy the search and keep us updated on your finds.
