This is a silver coin which is approximately the same size as a quarter but slightly thinner. Thanks for any feedback.

It looks similar to a 1774 Vatican States Half Scudo but not exactly (no denomination), especially the reverse. I'm guessing it's a token of some kind based on that

Well, whatever it is, it can be found at the bottom of this page. I think the denomination is a giulio.

EDIT: Sede Vacante seems to be something that happens when a pope dies. In 1774, Pope Clement XIV died, so the coin was probably made because of that.

Sede Vacante means approximately "the seat is empty" it is as Joseph7420 said, a term used after the pope has died and has not yet been replaced, sort of an interregnal period for the Vatican.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
