This coin... it's got a "V" on one side, and a Liberty Head on the other. But no denomination. What the heck is it? Maybe I should gold plate it and try to pass it off as a $5 coin... what do y'all think?

I've never found a fake coin (sorry aa2 ) but I did find this recently. It appears to be a gold-plated 1990 cent. Why on earth someone would do that, I have no idea. Maybe it's some other metal but acetone did absolutely nothing to it.

Compared to a normal red 1992:

The only upside I can see is that it will probably last longer than regular Zincolns.

Plated coin finds are fun.

I think they are experiments or promotional items maybe.

I think I know what the gold-plated Lincoln Cent is. I remember there are some science experiments where you take pennies and dip them into a zinc solution with strips of zinc metal, and this will plate them with zinc to turn them silver. To get the gold color, they would heat up the zinc-plated penny on a hot plate to fuse the zinc with the copper plating and turn it into a brass plating. The gold Lincoln Cent you have there is probably made this way, because pure gold is too expensive to be used to plate pennies anyways, am I right?

Sorry to hear that, aa2.

I have found two fake coins in my lifetime that I know of... one many years ago (keeping that one private), and the other in my recent CRH run - a 1974-D half made out of LEAD!

At least it cost only a cent; it was an interesting find. My one and only fake coin.

A fake common half Nowadays everything is faked

Interesting, I've seen some gold plated half dollars but never a cent

In a roll of halves I once found a plastic token for one free beer at a local bar. I don't drink.

Back when I searched boxes of halves, I would find the occasional guitar pick. Out of a box of cents, I found a 1776-1876 liberty bell centennial token. How's that for strange.
