I'm afraid to say that most of the US coins being minted are uninspiring and boring. The multiple yearly design change is just too much to deal with, and therefore I don't. It also makes mint/proof sets too large with junk I don't want at an inflated price.

I haven't had any dealings with the Presidential dollars. I've gotten a few SAC dollar proofs from cracked sets but, ended up giving them away in my last contest.

We still have the Roosevelt dime!

71 years and counting without a major design change? I think that's the record for U.S. coins but I'm not 100% on that.

Yep, the good ol' reliable Roosevelt dime! It is due for a design change but I admire the fact it has remained consistent. As for the Jefferson nickle I am outraged that they couldn't come up with a new and original reverse. The current reverse on that has been in use for 79 years!

Compare our old designs to the majority-junk designs they make nowadays and its not hard to see why the older series are so popular with collectors.

But when those old designs were in production, they were not popular. Collectors lamented the "bad designs" as compared to the even older designs.

Not continuously. We did have a two year gap in 2004-2005.

Very true jbuck! That bison design would have been a great new design.

They could have stuck with it, but the Monticello people would have had a hissy fit.

Your probably right jbuck! I was just kicking the can around here but it would be interesting to see that very bison design on a large coin like the half dollar.

I do like the bison on the 1991 commemorative half dollar. Smaller, faces the other way, but still pretty cool.

There's also the 2001 Buffalo commemorative silver dollar. Same design as the nickel (with some minor changes), but even bigger than the half.

Would be nice to have at least ONE animal besides an eagle on a circulating coin. Even Canada has a Caribou and a Beaver on everyday coinage. I think a Bison would fit the bill here.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn the next quarter series is either state birds or state animals, TheForce.

What I liked about the '04 &5, were the at least 6 (that I can think of) errors, due to die abrasion, cracks, scratches and gouges. I've yet to find a unicorn.

True! There is also a bison on the 1999 Yellowstone Dollar. I only mentioned the 1991 half dollar because that is what Force suggested.

Yeah--like when the dime, quarter and half were all the same design? Like the Liberty Seated? And even worse--the Barber coins? Talk about boring! At least we have different designs--uninspiring as they may be--for all our different coins.
