So I sometimes browse this Chinese fake-selling site just to get even more depressed about how extremely common coins are now being counterfeited in China. There was a time when only the key dates were counterfeited, and it slowly progressed on to more common coins. But THIS is the worst it can get, really. Other extremely common coins that are now counterfeited: - 1963 Franklin half dollar ( ) -1964 Roosevelt dime ( ) -1945 Mercury dime ...

For the uninitiated, these might hold some chance of passing. Especially if they are seeing the offer from Craig's List.
With a bit of education, none of those would last long as authentic.
The first counterfeits were in circulation the day after the real thing appeared. Counterfeits have been around forever.
The good news is the China junk is bad stuff and easily distinguished.

All are obvious fakes .. to the educated amongst us.
That is the purpose of the CCF ... education.

Quote:wow...I thought buying junk silver was a safe way to build a silver stack at scrap price or lower. Guess I'll only buy War Nickels...lol. It is a good way, so far I've seen none of these fakes go beyond the Chinese market onto mainstream sites such as ebay, plus they won't probably sell well unless there is some breakthrough in the faking technology as, in case of all these coins except the Franklin half dollar fake, the price of the fake is the same or higher than the price for which you might expect to buy the real deal. The purpose of this post is just to show that fakes of such common coins really exist. P.S.: Actually, I didn't manage to find a modern Chinese fake War Nickel on the internet, so you might have a point... Quote: All are obvious fakes .. to the educated amongst us.
That is the purpose of the CCF ... education. Yes, I could definitely tell these are fakes even without knowing, maybe except for the Ike dollar where I can't directly see a dead giveaway of its "fakeness". The problem here is, when buying such common coins some people won't even pay attention and they might end up buying a counterfeit coin.

I'm only amazed at how many people are unaware of just how many fake anythings are being made. If you go to flea markets you would see almost anything possible as a fake. And I don't mean just coins. Batteries are one of my favorites with Duracle, Durecell, Dinocell and many more. And they all look like real thing. I would guess many items we never think of as being a fake are out there all over the place. And very possible stuff like pencils, pens, paper, paper towels, printer cartridges, shoes and so many more things you just wouldn't know. I stopped by Value City Furniture a few days ago. happened to see in the back and saw boxes all marked Made In China. So even the chairs your sitting on may well be fakes or just made in China.

What do you think of making a list of US coins which are being counterfeited in China? Or more like a list of those who aren't counterfeited, would be much shorter

It is a scary thought. I figured if I bought junk silver and stayed away from silver dollars I would not have to worry. I don't want to go through 100's of silver dimes...my eyes are starting to hurt just thinking about it.

A couple of years ago there was series a series of raids on area NH/MA flea markets cracking down on fake purses (the main item I remember). I talked to a friend who sets up at one of the flea markets that got raided and I guess they raided that flea market 1/2 dozen different times. I guess the more product was confiscated & more people got arrested, the more replacements for both came in droves (for around here they would come in from NY).
