I am collecting the Native American dollars / Sacagawea dollars (pulling from my mint set), but I am not collecting the Presidential dollars. I have a few of interest, but mostly those end up in circulation for me.

Fifty years from now we will look back at these and call them classics.

Nope, not me jbuck! I would only call the 2000-2008 Sacs classics. After that is just garbage.

I dislike the turn away (long ago) from the honoring of an ideal (Liberty) to paying homage to men and the monuments built in their memory.

I like the Native American theme and I wish we used the coinage more. I would love to see some truly inspired designs by gifted artists make it on the coins. Please give us some classic, timeless designs...please.

But when those old designs were in production, they were not popular. Collectors lamented the "bad designs" as compared to the even older designs.

I know I have read of people not liking the Barber designs when they were circulating. I thought I read, and may be wrong, that when the walking half, Mercury dime, and Buffalo nickel were made that people were glad to finally see what they considered much better designs.

I also read recently where the Washington quarter was only supposed to be a commemorative, but that it was so well received they made it into a series. I don't remember where this info was.

Admittedly I don't care for the Barber design unless its on a coin retaining most of the details and luster. Then they look beautiful to me. However, they still cannot hold a candle to a Walker IMO.

If we had artistic talent worthy of the old masters, then I feel the ASEs would not have had to rely upon the (amazing!) Walking Liberty design.

And although I kind of like the eagle on the ASE REV, it is a far cry from the majestic looking design of the WLH REV. Every time I flip an ASE over, the eagle's aesthetics hit me as underwhelming by the artistic ability demonstrated on the OBV. The OBV and REV, to me, are a bit mismatched.

I see this same thing in the nickel. Monticello is fine, but that goofy looking OBV is a joke. It is off centered, leaves non-uniform empty space, and overall is terrible looking to me.

I would appreciate if they would go back to the old Jefferson effigy (the older one - not the one like 2005 where again, they left the front of the coin looking unbalanced by pushing the effigy to one side and leaving open space)), and the buffalo from 2005 on the REV.

I don't like the Native American or Presidential Gold Coins. I wish they would stop the series. Waste of time and money.

I am finishing a collection of the Presidential dollars in a CAPS album and also have a collection of the State Quarters in a DANSCO albums, and have been really enjoying collecting "high quality" coins in raw (not slabbed) format.

I like hunting for ones with minimal "hits" and really good "eye appeal". Not easy, since most dealers don't even carry these coins. And I just like the ways these coins look and the size of the collections as being "achievable"...

But yet I don't like the Native American coins or the Susan B Anthonys.. just don't appeal to my "personal taste"... (ok, I think they are "ugly"... sorry.. nothing against women or native americans... just not a fan of the designs..)

Someone in this forum said to me when I got back into this hobby to "collect what you like"..and that is key...

Unless you are a Dealer and in this as a living, collect what you LIKE, and store them how you LIKE...

From a financial standpoint, I consider coin collecting a "hobby".. NOT an "investment"..

I think the chances of making money on coins is slim to none.. in fact, I would forecast that most collectors in today's economy are likely to LOSE a significant amount of money on their collections over time.. if they are lucky, they will perhaps "break even" over their lifetime.... maybe.. but probably not...

But again, not the point to me..

I enjoy going to shows, meeting people, the "hunt" for a coin to fill a "hole" in my collection, sorting/categorizing coins, learning about new coins, and slowly (very slowly!) filling up my collections and deciding what set to work on next.

From a financial perspective, I can give you probably a dozen reasons why I think coins are probably are terrible "financial investment".. but again, I am not in this as an investment and I would NEVER suggest anyone go into this hobby to "make money"..

Collect what you like and enjoy the hobby, try to get your kids/friends into the hobby, and if a few coins end-up increasing in value over time, then that is just good luck and take it as such...

Regards,

Michael

Well, you have half your wish since the Presidential dollars ended last year.

I really don't see why they can't put the date and mm back on the obverse.

It would take an act of Congress to make that change. The original design legislation had "In God We Trust" on the edge as well. They didn't waste a lot of time amending the act to move it back to either side. The date and mintmark are obviously less important to them.

My wife and I go to the UK almost every year (she has a lot of family there) I picked up these new design Pound Coins in Edinburgh in change last April. They don't have a One Pound note, so the One Pound and Two Pound coins are widely circulated and they are fine with that...

Yikes! I'm the only one that likes the Presidential series? True they aren't very aesthetic but for me they are convenient; keep a roll or two in the golf bag for ball markers and gambling debts.
