Can anyone elaborate more on the 1947 dot nickel other than what the Charlton and Haxby say? Thus far I only have the no dot and maple leaf variety.

All I know is that the dot is $$$. Maybe the dot was used before the maple leaf, but I don't know.

Most oldtime dealers I talked to about this dot is a maple leaf die worn to a dot, thus a cool variety

I don't think I can agree with the worn ML theory.
The dot and ML appear in a different position so a
worn ML would not create the dot.
To me it appears more of a die chip or deteriorated die
although I'm not certain.

Some 1947'S have a small dot behind the 7 which some believe was intentional to mark where the maple leaf was to be punched, but never was. There are other dots in other positions on these, suggesting the dots result from simple Die Deterioration. The dot is very small and most people have trouble seeing it without magnification, and it is a distinct rough dot. If what you see is larger and slightly ragged, it is almost certain a 1947 Maple Leaf. These are a recognized variety and widely collected.
I've always had trouble believing the die chip/deterioration theory, since the dot appears in almost exactly the same position on the 1947 25 cent and dollar, and only 11 years earlier the mint deliberately put dots on some 1936 (actually 1937) 1, 10 and 25 cent coins under similar circumstances (waiting on updated dies from England but high demand for coins). The counter argument is that there are lots of dots on Canadian coins, and these became recognized merely because they are in the same position as the 1947 maple leaf. We'll probably never know for sure.
