1983 Penny Is This MD?

Note on the 'C' on CENT, the area in question is flat. How do we know it is flat? Note the color is the same. On the other side of the devices we see light to dark on contoured devices, but on the affected (MD) area it is just all the same color.

Note on this coin the affected area is lower than the normal device? It is because of the die movement that altered those areas. It is kind of like a dented bender on a car. It now takes the shape of what caused the damage. So on your coin and my example the movement of the dies altered that area. Now it is lower and the overall size of the device is there, but reduced on the contact area. This can be the same on the same device area, or different in size from device to device:

(this is actually from the same coin as the image above) But note how the MD is different in size from each device. So MD is random on how it affects the devices.
