That is a good story captainrich.
I think you picked the wrong set to get for the $99 though! Should have stuck with the Marine Corps set.

I just bought the Marines set directly from the mint.

Not biased at all.

Never met a Marine I did not like or respect.

While the medals are very nice, I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on these guys.

Navy and Marines sets are unavailable now as well. Looks like the Mint is honoring their stated policy of not exceeding the original orders amounts.

I didn't expect them to do anything else.

I don't subscribe to the theory that the US Mint is the "Evil Empire" and that it is out to mess with collectors. (@BadDog: I'm not saying you do, but from some of the comments left here on CCF it is clear that some folks do!)

The US Mint is a business run by human beings. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

It's not that they're the evil empire out to mess with collectors, but they have given people reasons to distrust them. A major one that comes to mind is the 2012 ASE set that was basically advertised as special and unique ect and then later in the year one of the coins from it appeared in another set that had never been mentioned during the sales of the first ASE set. To make matters even worse the second set was a Coin and Currency set where they had to coordinate with the BEP so they absolutely knew that set was coming the whole time.

Things like that lead people to lose trust in them when they aren't upfront about the offerings that will be coming.

I don't disagree with that but look closely enough and you will find similar flaws with any business. I.e., Marketing isn't in step with product/operations, or they have to make moves to correct issues that came up after the original direction was set. This may be easier to justify since this is completely discretionary spending. If we were talking about a tire or pacemaker company, there would likely be class action.

The fact that the 2012-S ASE was made available in another product was disappointing, I totally agree with that... yet I do like the other product.

Agreed. I liked the other product as well, I just wish that we would have known about it from the start. I still would have liked the ASE set knowing the proof was going to be used twice as the RP was the real selling point to me anyway, it just left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths when the surprise second product was announced.

I hear you, and I agree with you. I was taken aback on that product "course correction" as well.

Get someone from marketing, someone from product, and someone from operations in the same room and ask them the question on why this happened, and you will probably get 3 different answers. Maybe.

This just encouraged me go look at my sets from 2012. Thanks for that
