I came across this bill with "toning" noted on the slab, but not toning in a good way, like with a coin. You can see the vertical rainbow on the blowup. It doesn't go straight through the paper, however, as it would've shown up near the LL's in Dollars on the front. Anybody ever see this phenomenon? Is it an environmental thing or a paper impurity or just a weird occurrence? I thought it was interesting.

That's something new to me.
I've always thought of toning on paper money as an overall browning of the paper.

I think the rainbow is a combination of light on the holder and scanner ~ it's from the scanner bed. The toning may be referring to the yellowing of the paper as it is no longer bright "like new"

I see this note has those threads going all the way across it, top and bottom, that was talked about in a previous forum topic.

It may be a trick of lighting but it wouldn't explain the problem noted on the holder. They don't ordinarily note yellowing or browning, if it's natural.

Yes, the two thread lines are apparent on this bill.

The 'toning' referred to on the certificate is the overall ageing of the paper, it's beginning to turn with age. TPG services do indeed note toning of the paper when found. The 'rainbow' you are seeing is caused by the mylar encasing the note, it has nothing to do with the remark on the certificate. Take a look on ebay for 'rainbow toning' in the paper money section. There's about a million entries, and I guarantee you 'rainbow toning' is not going to be presented as a tout, because it doesn't exist.
