G. Put the wrong label in the slab.
Or that would be E.

Quote: Dave, I revert back to my original argument (in page 4) that an AU coin will not exhibit rub only on the high points, but will also contain various spots/bag marks in the fields as well. Mike's coin has virtually flawless fields. I do not believe it possible for circulation to create the high-point "wear" we see on Mike's coin without at least leaving some sort of evidence in the fields. Heck, if I took an MS-70 coin and used a precision file to just file a way a bit of metal on the high points I doubt I would produce results anywhere near to what seen in Mike's coin. All the other AU coins I looked in Heritage's repository (I didn't obviously check all but I checked quite a few) had ample evidence of circulation in the fields.
Even if we assume re-toning occurred inside the slab, additional color will not eliminate circulation marks from the fields which leaves me to conclude that the grader was: A. Clueless B. Overly conservative C. Nervous and unsure D. Was looking at a different coin and got confused? E. Some other human Error F. All of the above Worthy arguments. In the end analysis, anyway, this is a coin which commands Mint State money even if circulated. You buy the coin, not the slab, and this one's high-end. It's well-struck for an issue not known for that, the fields - as you mention - are pristine, and the color is (to me) to die for.

Quote: The capped bust guys at the fun show all advised to go with NGC over PCGS. NGC is the authority on the series apparently. More like they know it's easier to get it from you cheaper using that service if you decided to sell. Look at the recent auction results there's some big price gaps between the PCGS and NGC ones if that really is a 63 or better and PCGS is clearly the holder a seller would want it in from the results.

I think this is the one and only time I've disagreed with you Baseball. Looking at the raw auction numbers without taking into consideration each coin's eye appeal is a flawed metric. From my experience eye appeal reigns supreme at auctions. I wish it was that easy to crunch the numbers to determine value. But it isn't. No one can quantify eye appeal into $$. Hence our very flawed price guides.

Hence our very flawed price guides. In general I completely agree it's a mistake to look at numbers of other coins and then determine if a separate one is under or over priced based off that. In this case though I did look at a lot of the listings that brought those numbers and even considered venue, CAC, and holder premiums as well and still came to the same conclusion. As one example these two coins were both sold in the same Legend Auction and both are CAC with fairly similar looks. https://legendauctions.hibid.com/lo...GC-ms64-cac/https://legendauctions.hibid.com/lo...GS-ms64-cac/58s saw it a lot too as well as the other grades. It actually mattered more on the better ones than the run of the mill average looking ones

I personally prefer PCGS over NGC, as I feel they fetch a higher price at auction, but it's whichever you want to go with.

Finally, after a ridiculous amount of months, I should get NGC's verdict tomorrow.

Good luck! As I've said all along, it's without a doubt an MS coin. I'll call it an MS62-63.

I hope you are joking because if not I don't understand what is NGC seeing with the coin in hand that we obviously are not seeing from the pictures? Any hairlines visible when exposed to direct light? Any luster problems? Is there any trace of luster to begin with?
