Hi everyone! My father started collecting coins for my kids when they were little. Well, here we are, kids are grown, dad has been gone for 20 years and I'm just now trying to figure out what to do with the collection. Kids (now adults) have neither the time nor interest in the coins. Hubby says just let it go and let them worry about it once we're gone. I don't want to do that. I'm looking at rows of mercury and Roosevelt dimes, rows of quarters, 3 cent nickels?, silver dollars, bills, a row of Italian coins? I'm looking at probably over 200 coins. Almost all are in cardboard sleeves with the dates. To say I'm overwhelmed would be an understatement. I don't even know where to start. Dad used to go to coin auctions looking for specific items so I'm assuming at least some of them are worth something. Now whether that something is simply melt value or more significant, I've not a clue. I'm including the image of a Mercury dime in plastic from Littleton Coin (whom I've read differing opinions of). I believe the ct2-04 is grading? What is the 794.12? From my attempt to look up the value it appears to be worth a few bucks at most.... Can anyone give me a starting point? Thanks in advance!

See - Appraising a Coin Collection, top left. It will heel you a great deal.
The dime you are showing is worth about $1.30-$1.50, but don't let that discourage you.
Show us photos and we are happy to help.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Wish I had your problem :) buy a mega RedBook for $50.00 and hit the books. Also be sure to check for die variety's and or error coins. Many local coin shops offer appraisal services for a fee and as long as you indicate nothing is for sale their shouldn't be a problem haggling etc. With a few evenings research you should be able to break the collection down by denominations, type, etc. and compare to the value in the RedBook. Just keep in mind that the books usually show retail value (but not always) and that retail, wholesale, and at auction have sometimes significant differences. Be careful, once you learn about these treasures of your fathers you too might get bitten by the coin bug. Coin collecting stimulates the frontal cortex, ha. Good luck you found the right people to give you sound suggestions. Just be patient, study the coins I have coins valued above 1000 that at a pawnshop or slippery coinshop would fetch only 2-3 hundred. Your in for a fun ride learning these coins so good luck and have at it.

Thanks for the quick responses. I'll peruse that thread and go from there. Every year I say this is going to be my winter project. At least I'm getting a start. Hopefully it'll inspire me to get up early on these cold, gray winter mornings. You know, the ones where you can't tell if it's morning or not because it's so gloomy. Oh...what does the 794.12 mean?

Littleton's catalog # Littlton's a coin seller, with different "Plans" a bit pricier than most.

Ah....catalog #! Ok, that makes sense. I'm reading the appraising your collection. Starting to at least get a strategy in mind.

The coin # is 794 in their catalog and their grade is 12. (We normally write it F12)

Greetings....another inheritance newb Just beginning inventory and research...this looks like a fantastic place for resources and advice. Although I would find it hard to part with any of my pieces (after all my brother loved them) I want to educate myself. I'm overwhelmed by the volume but can already see such beauty in the artwork. Please be gentle.
