You guys are making me jealous now, as someone who has no local coin shop and only ~5 shows per year I can go to. You people who can go to one once a week astound me.

You can also look into local coin clubs. Meet other collectors and maybe do transactions that way.

1) Circulation or bank rolls. I don't as much anymore, but from 2008-2011 I was working as a cashier through college (Paid in full by the Georgia lotto!) and living at home. Didn't have a girlfriend for most of that time to drain the finances, so I always withdrew some of the paycheck as cash to buy rolls or from my till. Ended up accumulating something like 150 pounds of "keepers". 2. ebay. Way more ebay than I will readily fess up to. 3. Other auction sites and Vcoins - I won't spend more than $200 on a coin from ebay unless they are one of just a few sellers I would trust to that extent. 4. Gifts from family. During my childhood, I was given: - My mom's little coin collection, mostly bicentennial quarters, LWCs, and foreign pocket change - My grandfather's collection, mostly assembled from junk bin finds when he was a teen in the 40s, or picked up as souvenirs after he served in Korea. - Some of my great grandfather's LWC hoard - he was a police officer, and as he got older he moved to parking meter duty, and would swap out all the LWCs he found. - Other miscellaneous souvenirs; my grandparents and aunts/uncles would always bring back about $10 worth of foreign pocket change from every vacation to distribute to me and my cousins. 5. In 2013 I helped liquidate a massive collection/accumulation of mostly silver dollars, dimes, and halves. Total came to about $8,000 and I was very generously offered a 10% commission, which I opted to take first dibs on the coins. Those were my first Morgans, 2 cent, 3 cent, Barber, and SLQ acquisitions.

Circulation, RCM then if we get to go to a big town a LCS but that's about once a year. We have NO Coin Shows and one Second hand shop that is very high in price. Most when I buy come from CCF members.

I've been using ebay a lot lately for auctions and for Buy It Now/Best Offer. I like sellers that offer free shipping.

Some of the shops I've bought from over the years are defunct now. These days, there are just a couple of coin shops I patronize (in a city over 50 miles down the interstate) that are nationally known and deal in some very high end merchandise. That may be why the "chaff" they relegate to their "bargain" bins can be much better that anything you'd reasonably expect to find there. They seemingly just can't be bothered with the lesser stuff. So I keep dipping into that well. There are also coin shows in that same metropolitan area (local club events) that I can attend two or three times a year, and I usually find items there to spend my money on. Finally, there's a "local" jewelry shop (only about 20 miles away in the nearest town) from which I occasionally can get world silver coinage for or at just above melt. I haven't bothered with ebay for several years. I buy ancients from some Vcoins vendors I've found trustworthy. I did go to a country auction that was exclusively coins a few years back and did alright, but they've never had a second such event. Once in a while, I find things at yard sales, but usually only because I ask about any coins they might have. Swap meets and flea markets are pretty pathetic affairs in my region, although on rare occasions I've found some decent material at that sort of venue.

For purchases, mostly my LCS - been going to them for over 40 years (ever since I was a kid) and they're within a mile and a half of my home. Very occasionally shows and ebay. And I'm heavy into CRH. A good number of the AU/BU coins in my Jefferson nickel collections were found this way.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I guess I'm in the minority. I don't buy coins from ebay and I do not have a LCS nearby. I have obtained coins from Heritage and that was my main source up until a couple years ago when I got to know several online dealers. They have been getting some very nice material and I am comfortable with their descriptions (along with pics) so there are few surprises when I get the coin. I'm at the point now where I only buy original coins with nice eye appeal. There's so much to factor, in addition to originality, like strike, color, accurately graded, etc. TPG's have made it difficult because I have seen grade inflation and they are stabbing coins that lack these qualities.
