I thought of an interesting forum game that might help people get better at detecting problem coins. It works like this: you post a coin graded by PCGS or NGC, but without the full slab so others can't see whether it graded straight or with a "details" designation. Then other people can guess whether the coin was straight graded or whether it was identified as a problem coin, and what the problem is, if any. After a day or so, the original poster can reveal the grade on the slab. I'll start with this:

Cool idea! I start off with details-ED.

That really looks like a Details coin to me in more than one way.
So, who posts the next coin after the answer is revealed?

Half of the posts in the grading subforums already play this "game", no?

Quote: Half of the posts in the grading subforums already play this "game", no? In a way, yes, but I envisioned this as a way for people to check their answers against actual TPG standards. Having an idea of what is likely to grade straight and what isn't would be useful to anyone trying to decide which coins to submit for grading. Quote: So, who posts the next coin after the answer is revealed? I think I'll leave it open-ended. As soon as the results of the current coin are posted, the first person who decides to post a new image chooses the next coin.

Good idea, hope this catches on. I'll say details (ED) on the subject coin.

There seems to be a consensus.

I'll go against the crowd and say straight. Definitely has surface porosity and planchet defects, but perhaps not enough to warrant details. It would be a close call anyways.

Here is the full slab: (Source: https://coins.ha.com/itm/half-cents...ion-071515#)Interestingly enough, this one graded straight. It seems like the grading services have some tolerance for minor porosity on early coppers. Now anyone else is free to post another slabbed coin for others to guess. If no one posts within the next day or two, I might do another one myself.

I like the idea as well. I'm on the fence with this one, but my gut says details, environmental damage and porous. I'm assuming the scratches on the obverse are from the holder though?

I don't own this coin, but I think that it's okay to post a coin that I don't own.

It wasn't just the corrosion and scratches on the first coin, but the fact that I didn't see any dirt accumulated. The lesson that's taught me is to examine any early coppers in holders very, very carefully.
This 2nd coin is really hard to judge since the pics are so tiny. Looks like a high grade cent with no luster and slightly irregular tone; also, no dirt. I'd say cleaned.

Quote: I don't own this coin, but I think that it's okay to post a coin that I don't own. Yes, that is fine. It would be nice if you posted a link to where you found the coin when you reveal the full slab, like I did with the one I posted above. I don't see anything fishy about the one you posted, so I'll go with straight grade.
