Here are a few ECs from my collection with a 'windmill' theme!
Not surprisingly, most are from Holland! This one is from Amsterdam:
These next few are from a heritage site called the Zaanse Schans, a few miles outside Amsterdam. It's a very popular stopping place for bus tours and excursions from cruise ships. In addition to the mills, there are cheese makers and workshops making clogs:
The mills themselves are beautifully restored and maintained in working order:
This mill is called the 'Cat Mill' and is used for making paint, rather than the more usual flour:
I also have some windmill ECs from the USA. These two are from Solvang in California. This town was founded in 1911 by Danish settlers, and has no fewer than six windmills, reflecting its Danish heritage. The first mill was built in 1922 by J C Wulff to pump water and grind animal feed for his farm. The other mills were built by Ferdinand Sorensen from the 1940s to the 1970s in the style of traditional Danish smock mills:
Finally, this penny comes from Lynden in Washington State. According to the internet, Lynden Mill was constructed in 1987, to the design of Robert Libolt, with Craig Engels as construction superintendant, Doug Campbell as engineer, and with fabrication by Lynden Sheet Metal. The ground floor is a gift shop full of all sorts of Dutch and windmill themed items, and the upper three floors are run as an hotel, with bedrooms in the mill body. The sails turn by electric motor and are illuminated at night, which must be quite a sight!
