Wow - this is a great read and as always, the results lead to even more questions! I hope you can continue this somehow.

Yep, Crazyb0, that's kind of what it's at this point looking like -- that the metal suppliers to the mint may have used a number of different metals, and at various different amounts, as compared to what the "official" alloy would have suggested. I find this VERY interesting, and while it seems to confirm my original belief -- that different alloys were being used, and that is the cause of the drastically different metal detector readings -- the lack of quantifiable data thus far is frustrating.

Earle42 -- thanks for the kind words! Yes, I plan to see if I can't find any additional avenues through which to try and ascertain more data (possibly my next step being to find out if I can find someone at one of those "we buy gold" shops that might have an XRF analyzer, and would be more familiar with looking for "noble metals" in a sample...)

Thanks for your investigation and results, Steve. The fact that copper content varied widely (relatively) is certainly intriguing as well as the supposed presence of other metals.

I know others were questioning if other factors such as position and soil may lead to the differing detector readings, so it made me think. I am not a detectorist, but I do own a detector and a BU set of War Nickels. It would be simple for me to set up a small experiment with the 11 coins to see if I get any varying readings there. While they're out, I could weigh and magnet test them as well.

If only I had a few more BU sets to compare them to.

Spruett -- I'd love to see your results. I had another detectorist post some results also; he tested 23 War Nickels he has. I'm interested in hearing your results, if you have the time to do the testing...
