Yep, Crazyb0, that's kind of what it's at this point looking like -- that the metal suppliers to the mint may have used a number of different metals, and at various different amounts, as compared to what the "official" alloy would have suggested. I find this VERY interesting, and while it seems to confirm my original belief -- that different alloys were being used, and that is the cause of the drastically different metal detector readings -- the lack of quantifiable data thus far is frustrating.

Yes, I plan to see if I can't find any additional avenues through which to try and ascertain more data (possibly my next step being to find out if I can find someone at one of those "we buy gold" shops that might have an XRF analyzer, and would be more familiar with looking for "noble metals" in a sample...)
