Good point about the numbers @tdz. I think that it is a fascinating topic. Here is a Schilling from the German Duchy of Pomerania-Wolgast dated AD 1501:

Thanks for the additional info @petrus. I have it attributed as Saurma 4849. With this coin, we enter Levinson territory (for me at least). Here is my Batzen from the Habsburg Territory of Salzburg dated AD 1500:

In looking for pre-1507 coins, I need to remember that Salzburg's St. Rupert and a few other places in the Germanic world with saints' images fit one of my collecting themes. Nice coin!

@tdz, glad you are getting bitten by this bug too. I see three of these for sale on ma-shops right now.

Yeah, the 4th edition planted the bug, but I've been trying real hard to not stray too far from my previous collecting themes. Poland gets me back to 1507. I also collect Brabant, so that gets me back to 1474, but I think not every date between 1507 and 1474 is accessible. Silesia and Pomerania are close enough to Poland to also help out. But I also collect saints. I have a couple of later St. Ruperts on Salzburg coins. There is St. Elizabeth of Thuringia on the albus of Hessen. That would be a very nice one to add. (but I'll also go look at MA shops... thanks for the tip)

Quote: (These must be very common?) I think yes (as getting a pretty attractive example is not a wallet-buster), though I also see variation in the legend ("Saint Rupert, Bishop"), so maybe a few subtypes exist: @spence: SANCTVS RVDBERT' EPS Yours: SANCT RVDBERTVS EPVS I have a 1513 which I did not post for that year since I had something else ... I'm thinking I will likely have a 1500 before the next round of How Far Back

I've had a few of these oldies in my collection for over 15 years, but as this thread has inspired me to look for more, I've been shocked a couple of times at where the auction prices have gone.

Quote: St. Ruprecht, born c. 543 or c. 698 - c. 718. I cannot let this pass without comment For the year 1682 I posted a Salzburg coin which commemorates the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the archbishopric of Salzburg by Ruprecht. This would be consistent with a birthyear in the mid-6th century. However, later scholarship determined this date was too early, and that more likely the archbishopric of Salzburg was founded near the end of the 7th century, and that Ruprecht died around 710 A.D. Regardless, he is quite the man in Salzburg numismatics, appearing on coins there for MANY centuries. Much to our benefit here!
