I agree, both Toison d'Argents are really nice. I hadn't noticed those ermine tails in the crown previously. Here is a Zingroschen from the German Duchy of Saxony-Ernestine (Schneeberg mint) dated AD 1498:

@petrus, yes I believe that it is listed in Saurma too (I have the attribution as Levinson I-391a and Krug 2005). Here is a Half Schilling from the German Imperial City of Nördlingen dated AD 1497:

You can compare to mine, if that helps . Your date starts closer to that little crown at 12:00 than mine does, and there is a circular bit that resembles the base of a 6 which runs into the crown, so I tend to agree that 1496 is a good guess. What does Levinson say about the other dates for this type that would be possibilities? Ironic that one of us has quite a nice coin that is weak only on the date, and the other has a kind of crummy coin with a clear date. As for "recent pick ups", I've tripled the number of pre-1500 Brabant coins in my collection since our last edition, but I started with only 3, so I have a long way to go. This one came from Elsen in May. (later edit: I realized yesterday that this type was missing from Numista, so now it has been submitted ... I think @petrus is responsible for some of the Brabant listings there, too)

Yes exactly, here is a comparison of the date on our two coins:

This Cavallo from the Italian City State of Aquila can be definitively dated to AD 1495:

Could this be the first year we will actually NOT have a dated coin? I'm out, @pepactonius is out. I think Brabant is a no-go for 1495, (though there is a dated coin from Liege), so maybe @petrus is out. The Pomerania schilling is attainable. I think a 1495 mis-attributed as a 1497 sold a couple of months ago at an auction in Poland... did someone on CCF get it (it's findable in CoinArchives under Pomorze 1497)? @spence, thanks for carrying the thread the next few days . And nice to see an Italian coin again. I know I posted one for 1585. Maybe there has only been one other posted since then. I find it interesting that Aquila has already abandoned gothic style lettering.

Quote: I find it interesting that Aquila has already abandoned gothic style lettering. I checked a Duchy of Ferrara coin I have from the late 15th century, and a coin from Bologna while browsing, and both have similar block-style lettering. So I learned something today (always a good thing).

Quote: Could this be the first year we will actually NOT have a dated coin? Yes I think so. In my collection (but also for the purposes of this thread), coins that are attributable to a single year "count".
