That sure is some serious Die Deterioration, also on the reverse. Thanks for sharing!

You're very welcome and thank you spruett001! I'm definitely keeping this one, since it's a very good example of Die Deterioration. It will go in my collection with my other coins. I can't believe that the die didn't break or crack at this point. It's a keeper in my book.

No cracks anywhere? Polished out? Which mint tech won that gamble :) Haven't come across one that bad. Getting close to where I can almost guess the decade lol.

Reminds me more so a spooned edge on the coin. Rolling the edges over the devices. I would have considered Dryer Coin, but the edge didn't seem flat enough.

Thank you wrongnumber and Coop! The U.S. Mint definitely overworked this poor die to its absolute limits. There's no Die Cracks or anything. Just severe Die Deterioration from heavy die wear. Coop, I'll take more pictures that will include the edge of the coin. Edit: Coop, the edges are normal. They aren't spooned. It's the result of extreme Die Deterioration (die wear).

Thank you SliverDollar2017! It's the worst case of Die Deterioration I've ever seen! Have you seen one this bad before?

Boy, that's even worse than the one I wrote about in Mox's contest. Didn't know the 82's were that way!
Was looking at the distortion of details on the bust and coat too...really pulling them apart.

Quote: Boy, that's even worse than the one I wrote about in Mox's contest. Didn't know the 82's were that way! I know right! Some 1982 Lincoln Cents were known to exhibit extreme die wear ( Die Deterioration). The U.S. Mint was really pushing this die to its most extreme limits for sure. It's has heavy die flow, "Orange Peel Texture", and a very mushy and melted appearance to it. It has a very distorted appearance to it, especially on the motto, bust, coat, and Liberty. This just goes to show you how much abuse these dies go through.

I agree with you Mark. It's very ugly with all of that die wear. Definitely something you don't see happening too often.

Wow. Quite a find. That's a cringeworthy keeper, for sure!

Thank you fortcollins! It's definitely a keeper, but a gut wrenching one! I've never seen such an ugly Memorial cent until now.

Severe Die Deterioration, indeed. It does appear that both surfaces have experienced some battering as well. I don't see peripheral die expansion and erosion on either face, although this is the year/denomination in which you find that form of die wear.

Thank you Mike Diamond for your input on this thread! Even though it doesn't have Peripheral Die Expansion and Die Erosion, it's still an excellent example of Die Deterioration. I'll keep it in my collection, as it's very interesting. Thank you Mike Diamond! I appreciate it.
