Quote: think it's a silly waste to have two different mints making the same silver eagle proof coin. Just imagine if they also started making Denver and Philly mint marked Proof ASE coins! Why not?

I agree, it would be nice if they'd liven things up every year instead of just producing another proof that's the same as the W but with an S. However, it's not a major gripe for me and as an avid collector of the series... they've got me by the proverbial short ones.

Heck, the proofs used to be made in Philly and there was an RP there in 2011, so it's not that big a stretch. I know you're being facetious, but I certainly hope they don't do that. My ASE budget is stretched to the max as it is! Maybe they'll do a special D ASE for a Denver anniversary or something.

I don't care for the overabundance of product coming out of the US Mint these days, but I looked at what the RCM ( Royal Canadian Mint) has for sale, and THAT is just crazy! It's almost like P.T. Barnum is running that place!

@ jimbucks- i had thought of that & I pray they don't do that, lol.. @ celticknot- yep, I feel the same. it's not a major gripe for me yet, but i'll pitch a minor one. i'll still buy the things just for the sake of trying to keep the collection current— and it is silver coin, so I can't complain for long, lol— but it is with some curmudgeonly stink-eye that I buy one. all the various products from the mint is a little over the top to me. i'm a fairly simple enthusiast of silver dollars & gold stuff, but I read about & get my hands on some other stuff, too. I really like the silver eagles & decided to start chunking together a 'collection' while still affordable to do so. all the stuff they're jamming out at these mints... crikey.. why doesn't the mint make a .9999 silver bullion Morgan dollar... *sigh* well I bought my 2018-S and i'm still gonna look forward to it as I do any other coin purchase and i'm still gonna welcome it into the group happily & be grateful for it, as usual. and i'll post some pictures like I should. life is good. I dig this forum. I read here all day if given the opportunity.

omxfl, did you mean the 2018 S RP sets? That's another thread.

Opening week sales were 77,467 which is significantly less than opening week sales for the W-minted P-ASE from Jan08 (211,071).

@ omxfl- am assuming you meant jan'18 proof ASE sales opening week?.. if that's the case, i'm not very surprised at the relatively low number.. I wonder how many millions they've already made only to sell less than 100K on opening week.. I wonder if there's a genius somewhere at the mint feeling the friction of low sales on a popular product.. my '18-S ASE proof has shipped, incidentally. time to visit the mint website again, now i'm feeling inspired, lol

My new S - ASE looks beautiful, hard to complain about it. I wouldn't mind seeing a D - ASE :) Hopefully not that many people care about the S - ASE and the mintage is relatively low in the end.

so, I had a chat session with the mint today, expressed my opinion, etc.. the 'person' at the other end said it would be sent to 'upper management'. after the chat ended I sent an email to the customer service wing of the mint and expressed it again. i'm getting my money's-worth out of this '18-S.
but now that i've thought about it a while, if they're lookin for something additional, different and interesting, instead of just another mass-produced proof they should make a different surprise silver eagle each year. next year they should do a 2019-D enhanced burnished silver eagle & limit the production to, say, 225K. the year after they can give us a 2020-P reverse proof silver eagle & limit production. etc.

i have to sit down and get some pix, but I wanted to ask anyone who has both the 2018 proofs, the W & the S:
have you placed your two 2018 proofs side by side and looked at them? the devices, they look a little different. my 18-S devices look 'less grey' and brighter than the 18-W devices.
proofs are difficult things to get good pix of, but i'll try to get a couple good pix & post later.

I received mine today, MrPink. I just got home so haven't had a chance to look at them yet but I'll check them out tomorrow and do a side-by-side with the W.
